Position Description: Within the Maryland Department of Health (MDH), the Prevention and Health Promotion Administration's (PHPA or Administration) mission is to protect, promote, and improve the health and well-being of Marylanders and th their families through provision of public he health leadership with local health de departments, providers, community based or organizations, and public and private sector ag agencies, giving special attention to at ri risk and vulnerable populations.

This position will serve as the State Public Health Veterinarian. The State Public Health Veterinarian is established and assigned specific authorities and responsibilities in statute (HG 18-312 to 18-320) and is essential as the Department's scientific and administrative lead for programs to prevent rabies, swine and avian influenza, Zika, and other infections that can be transmitted from animals to humans. This position also oversees the Department's Center for Zoonotic and Vectorborne Diseases and works with CDC, other parts of MDH, MDA and DNR, local health departments, the Maryland veterinary community, healthcare providers, and the public to prevent and control these infectious disease threats.

Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or a Veterinary Medical Doctor’s de degree from a college or university ac accredited or recognized by the American Ve Veterinary Medical Association.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Formal training and a graduate degree in e epidemiology and other public health field a and state or local health department e experience is preferred.
