Position Description: The Antibiotic Stewardship Coordinator will provide education to healthcare facility staff and leadership on how to implement antibiotic stewardship programs (ASP) at various levels of the healthcare continuum. This is a contracted position funded by the multi-year CDC Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity cooperative agreement. This position will report to the Healthcare Associated Infections and Prevention Program Manager.

The Antibiotic Stewardship Coordinator will develop educational materials, presentations, training programs and workshops to assist outpatient facilities, long term care facilities, ambulatory surgical centers, dialysis facilities, critical access hospitals and acute care facilities in implementing and evaluating the key components of an antibiotic stewardship program. This position will also assist with running the ASP subcommittee of the Healthcare Associated Infections Advisory Committee and may be asked to assist with healthcare associated outbreaks and exposure and emergency response as needed.

The individual in this role will also assist in writing grants and summary reports, and provide technical advice and assistance to local health departments on ASP, healthcare partners and the public. This role requires reviewing and conducting literature reviews, data analyses as well as developing and evaluating methods of training for health care providers and staff.

The individual in this role will participate in after-hours activities including partner meetings, conferences and emergency response as needed.

Responsibilities include:

– Working with the ASP subcommittee to implement ASP throughout the state – Working with the infectious disease pharmacist to develop educational materials, programs and presentations

– Using data from surveys or NHSN to target facilities

– Coordinating an educational conference with HAI staff and external stakeholders

– Coordinating educational booth at medical and healthcare conferences

– Providing evidence for policy decisions

– Presenting information to various stakeholders

– Writing grants and other funding proposals

– Participating in continuous quality improvement processes for the program and office

Requires Knowledge Of:

– Considerable independent judgment and advanced knowledge of applied public health practice

– Antibiotic use

– The components of an antibiotic stewardship program at different levels of care

– The healthcare system at different levels of acuity

– Evaluating a program’s effectiveness

– The use of data or evidence for decision making

– Continuous quality improvement (CQI) methods in the public health

– Organizational skills

– Oral and written communication skills

– Interpersonal relations as applies to contacts with representatives of other governmental agencies, tribes, private organizations, physicians and the public

Qualifications: This positions will require strong knowledge of antibiotic usage. Clinical background either in pharmacy or nursing is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications (at least one of the following):

– Degree in pharmacy, nursing or medicine and experience working in a healthcare setting

– Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES)

– Certification in Infection Control (CIC) by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology Inc.
