Position Description: Fellows will collaborate in ongoing research and also design and lead studies of their own, all with mentoring by core principal investigators. The specific content of each fellowship will be tailored to meet the goals and objectives of the fellow. UC Davis provides a robust program of courses, seminars, and other learning and teaching opportunities for postdoctoral scholars. Principal investigators are actively involved in developing public policy on firearm violence and its prevention, and fellows will be expected to participate in this important translational work.

Qualifications: We are recruiting one or more outstanding young investigators to undertake an intensive two-year postdoctoral program of mentored, applied research on the nature and prevention of violence, with a particular emphasis on firearm violence. Positions will be awarded on a competitive basis to individuals who have completed a doctoral degree program (MD, PhD, DrPH, or equivalent) and have made a long-term commitment to violence research, either as their primary career focus or as an element of a career in a clinical health profession.

Organization Description: Fellowships are offered jointly by the Violence Prevention Research Program and the new University of California Firearm Violence Research Center, both at the University of California,Davis. VPRP helped develop the public health approach to violence prevention; UCFC is the nation’s first publicly-funded center for firearm violence research. Our program of research on firearm violence is recognized worldwide as among the best of its kind, and firearm violence research will be the core activity of the fellowship. Other areas of sustained interest include individual and social factors associated with violence across the life course, the effectiveness of violence prevention policies and programs, criminal justice decision making, and risk prediction. Both organizations are led by Garen Wintemute, MD, MPH, an emergency physician and one of the nation’s leading firearm violence researchers and policy experts. Core principal investigators represent the many of the disciplines appropriate to the study and prevention of violence: medicine, epidemiology, criminology, sociology, econometrics, and policy evaluation.
