Position Description: The Health Analysis team at U.S. News & World Report is looking for a senior quantitative health services researcher to help us tackle complex research questions using big data and cutting-edge statistical methods. This individual will join the team responsible for the widely cited U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings and will help develop other high- profile comparisons of healthcare providers. Your work will have significant public visibility and will inform life- altering healthcare decisions made by millions of people each year.

Your primary responsibility will be to collaborate with the Health Analysis team’s principal investigator and other organizational leaders in managing a team of analysts developing scientifically rigorous ways of measuring the performance of hospitals, physicians and other healthcare providers. On a day-to-day basis, you’ll write and review code to manage datasets that contain millions of healthcare claims records, contribute to methodologic decisions, mentor junior researchers, and research and implement process improvements to ensure the team’s scientific output is accurate and timely. You’ll have the opportunity to interact with leading clinical experts and quality researchers, and to submit work to academic journals and conferences.

Analyzing data used by U.S. News or being considered for use in the rankings and ratings Staying abreast of relevant peer-reviewed literature and state/federal public reporting requirements Identifying and assessing public and private data sets that may enhance U.S. News methodologies Working with the team to implement such enhancements Deliver results in a consumer-friendly format for publication on usnews.com Exchanging ideas with researchers, physicians and health care executives including ongoing collaboration with contract and staff data analysts. Participating in, and eventually leading, U.S. News-hosted meetings with clinicians, quality researchers and hospital administrators and other stakeholders who provide U.S. News with ongoing feedback Potentially participating in occasional speaking engagements and the pursuit of peer-reviewed research projects

Qualifications: Requirements:

Masters or doctoral degree in biostatistics (preferred), epidemiology, health services research, economics, health policy, or a similar field. At least five years of full-time work experience managing and/or leading complex research projects involving multiple researchers and data sources. Expert knowledge of STATA, including MATA and/or .ado files. Firm grasp of advanced quantitative methods, including hierarchical regression and factor modeling. Experience managing and mentoring junior analysts. Experience working in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and multiple concurrent research projects. Highly organized and skilled at planning. Commitment to publishing actionable data and information that helps engaged patients to make informed healthcare decisions. Experience working with healthcare claims data and/or healthcare provider profiling is a plus.
