Position Description: The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), Office of Health Protection/Division of Laboratories is seeking qualified candidates to interview for the position of full-time Laboratory Research Scientist located in Chicago, IL. The IDPH Division of Laboratories has a staff of 110 employees with three facilities located in Carbondale, Springfield and Chicago, IL. The laboratory serves the state public health system and environmental protection network with high quality diagnostic and analytical laboratory testing through provision of surveillance data.

The Laboratory Research Scientist position independently performs highly complex genetic testing of clinical specimens and environmental samples for infectious disease agents, including pathogenic and non- pathogenic bacteria, viruses, parasites, etc. using assays based, to a large extent, on molecular diagnostic methodologies. Illustrative examples of job duties include: Developing or validating new laboratory testing methodologies for the isolation and detection of infectious agents using PCR and whole genome sequencing methods. Trains and instructs laboratory personnel in the principles and operation of new tests. Serves as technical consultant on molecular testing to other IDPH laboratory staff, physicians and the general public.

Qualifications: The position requires an advanced degree (doctorate preferred) in chemistry, immunology, microbiology, toxicology, virology, or other scientific discipline closely related to these fields, supplemented by five years professional laboratory experience in basic or applied laboratory research. Requires the ability to conduct responsible, independent basic and applied laboratory research and to apply the results obtained to upgrade the analytical capability of laboratories. Requires experience with Biological Safety Levels 2 and 3 (BSL-2, BSL-3). Working knowledge of Biological Safety Level 4 (BSL-4) protocols for infectious agents is preferred. Requires the ability to teach. Must be certifiable as technical supervisor for high complexity diagnostic assays as defined by the current Clinical Laboratories Improvement Act (CLIA).
