Position Description: The Pennsylvania Department of Public Health, Bureau of Epidemiology, Division of Infectious Disease Epidemiology is seeking a Public Health Physician to lead and coordinate infectious disease case/outbreak identification and investigation at the statewide and district levels; develop and implement disease intervention, prevention and control strategies; and recommend communicable disease policy.

Through supervision of Epidemiology Research Associates from district offices, direct the investigation of infectious disease outbreaks to identify etiological agents, sources, modes of transmission and appropriate methods for disease prevention and control. Supervise and provide recommendations and training to Epidemiology Research Associates regarding quality of case/outbreak investigations.

Provide epidemiological expertise and consultation to a statewide public health network of Department programs, state/municipal employees, state health centers and county/municipal health departments using published national standards of excellence and practice. Also provide consultation to representatives of federal agencies, the medical community, the public, private facilities, and others.

Collaborate in the maintenance of statewide system of infectious disease surveillance and reporting under Chapter 27 of the Communicable Disease Regulations. Assist in the implementation of Pennsylvania Disease Reporting Act by ensuring prompt reporting of reportable diseases. Provide after hours, on-call, and emergency consultative services on rotation. Be available 24/7 to respond to public health emergencies.

Qualifications: Graduation with a degree of doctor of medicine or osteopathy from a medical school approved or recognized by the Pennsylvania Medical Licensing Board or the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Licensing Board and completion of an approved U.S. residency training program; and two (2) years of professional medical experience, including one (1) year in a public health setting.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania issued by the State Medicine Board or Osteopathic Medicine Board; or eligibility for such licensure. Candidates must obtain the required license prior to beginning employment.

1. Communicate complex technical information on infectious disease cases/outbreaks, intervention, prevention and control measures to a variety of audiences. 2. Proficiency in SAS or R data analysis and reporting application. 3. Working knowledge of infectious disease epidemiology principles and methods. 4. Knowledge of systems used to collect data in healthcare or community settings. 5. Familiarity with clinical diagnostic options and clinical decision making.
