Position Description: State Epidemiologist and Bureau Director (K0124678) in the Bureau of Epidemiology and Public Health Informatics

Provide policy-level leadership regarding epidemiology for a broad spectrum of public health issues. Includes assessment and determination of Agency role in surveillance and investigations; how investigations, results and other related information should be provided to clinicians, public health departments, and the public; when a public health issue should be communicated to the Agency, State leadership, or federal public health agencies. Direct surveillance activities, epidemiologic investigations and coordinate public health measures across KDHE programs. Promote data analysis to design and implement prevention, intervention, and evaluation strategies. Coordinate with public health preparedness and Emergency Management on bioterrorism and other public health emergencies. Serve as the Director of the Bureau of Epidemiology and Public Health Informatics (BEPHI), providing epidemiologic direction for the infectious disease, environmental health, and trauma program epidemiologists. Supervise highest level professionals in BEPHI, including health officers and CDC/EIS officers assigned to the Bureau. If a licensed veterinarian, may serve as the designated state public health veterinarian.

Qualifications: Minimum Requirements: MPH or PhD in epidemiology plus at least five years’ experience practicing epidemiology in a federal, state, or local health department.

Preferred Criteria: •Comprehensive knowledge of standard principles of epidemiology and outbreak investigation. •Leadership and management abilities at a major administrative unit level. •Three or more years’ experience in public health. •Three or more years’ management and supervisory experience for professional positions. •Two or more years’ clinical experience or teaching. •Excellent interpersonal skills. •Adept at personal computing, scientific writing, public speaking, and data analysis. •Knowledge of surveillance systems. •Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access •Proofreading, editing, attention to detail
