IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients. The successful candidate will be assigned work in Tanzania, Africa to provide support for the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR).  

SCOPE OF WORK
The Microbiologist will provide oversight of malaria surveillance laboratory testing at selected sites to improve quality of malaria microscopy and malaria rapid diagnostic testing.  This position is contingent upon contract award.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide oversight of malaria surveillance laboratory testing at selected sites to improve quality of malaria microscopy and malaria rapid diagnostic testing
  • Perform ELISA immunoassay testing, DNA extraction, and other standard laboratory methods
  • Work in close collaboration with clinicians, public health professionals, and laboratorians to ensure effective surveillance for vaccine-preventable diseases  
  • Provide expertise regarding appropriate specimen collection, transport, and laboratory testing
  • Provide training in microscopy, ELISA, and other laboratory procedures and techniques
  • Author Standard Operating Procedures
  • Adhere to quality guidelines

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. Degree in microbiology, biology, immunology, biochemistry or a related discipline

Required:

  • Experience in the use of microscopy to identify different malaria-causing parasites (P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae and P. ovale), their various parasite stages, including gametocytes, and the quantification of parasite density to monitor response to treatment
  • Research experience involving preparation and handling of clinical samples, real-time PCR, ELISA, and other standard laboratory methods
  • Knowledge of biosafety requirements for research being performed
  • Experience authoring standard operating procedures
  • Demonstrated experience writing project reports, research protocols and manuscripts

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in the design, development and optimization of real-time PCR or ELISA based in vitro malarial diagnostic assays
  • Previous experience with specimen collection and methods for optimization
  • Previous experience providing training in the use of microscopy to identify malarial parasites, as well as training in the performance of SOPs
  • Experience working within the guidelines of a quality management system
  • Previous experience interacting and effectively communicating with a diverse set of stakeholders, including clinicians, public health professionals, and laboratorians
  • Previous experience working in a similar role
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize new research ideas for project research

Language Skills:

  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English
