Position Description: The University of Africa, a newly commissioned public university in Toru Orua, Bayelsa State, Nigeria is seeking an Inaugural Dean for its School of Health Science. The position of Inaugural Dean will be for the term of one year and will be responsible for selecting the initial degree offerings, hiring the Founding Dean, hiring the relevant faculty and staff, overseeing the development of the curricula and pedagogy, and establishing the management and administrative systems of the college. Activities/Responsibilities: • Leading the search committee for a Founding Dean • Leading the dialogue with health employers in Bayelsa state and surrounding states to determine what health professionals and skills are in most need. The school may start up to fifteen new degree programs in the first few years. Degree programs most likely to be started include nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, biomedical engineering tech, dental technician (midlevel provider), ultrasound tech, radiology tech and pharmacy tech, and hospital and health system management (in conjunction with the School of Management). Non-degree programs may include nurse specialty education, such as certificates in critical care, dialysis, OR, endoscopy, and cath lab. • Leading the recruitment of relevant faculty. The faculty is anticipated to include a mix of Nigerian, Africa, and international staff. • Leading the recruitment of the management and administrative team, including heads of admissions, student services, operations, finance and budgeting, contracts and procurement, information technology (including student information systems, learning management systems, and digital library), and practicum and employer relations. • Overseeing the establishment of all the administrative and management systems of the school. • Overseeing the outfitting and staffing of the schools labs, simulation center, and library. • Management of the relationship with the National Universities Commission which is responsible for accrediting the school of health sciences. • If the Inaugural Dean is a practicing clinician, arrangements can be made for certification and indemnification and establishment of a practice in conjunction with the teaching hospital. • Representation of the School of Health Science and the University of Africa to various interest groups and various meetings. • Travel: Occasional local, regional and international travel to meet with accrediting organizations and develop institutional partnerships.

Qualifications: Requirements: 1. Significant experience in senior leadership in a health school (health science, nursing, medical, dental, etc.). 2. Significant management experience. 3. At least ten years’ experience. 4. Strong interpersonal skills and team building skills 5. Experience in Africa or other LMIC is preferred but not required. 6. Experience with blended learning (face to face and online) is a plus 7. Strong spoken and written English skills.

Organization Description: The University of Africa is a newly commissioned public university in Toru Orua, Bayelsa State, in southern Nigeria. The school is under the patronage of Bayelsa State governor Henry Dickson and will have five professional schools: 1) Health Sciences, 2) Medicine, 3) Humanities, 4) Law, and 5) Management. A 150 bed teaching hospital is being built for the School of Health Sciences and School of Medicine and the Health Sciences School expects to admit its first set of students for commencement of classes in September 2018.
