Position Description: Background: Since the Lancet 2008 Undernutrition Series there has been an intensive scale- up of diverse multi-sectorial nutrition actions to combat undernutrition in high- burden contexts. However less attention has been given to developing robust measurement methods for effective monitoring and evaluation of these programs and policies. This research faculty position will support a new four- year initiative funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that aims to catalyze increased availability and use of data for decision making in several focus countries in Africa and Asia as well at global level. The initiative involves a combination of technically-informed strategic planning around nutrition measurement priorities, targeted measurement research (with focus on intervention coverage), development and dissemination of technical measurement guidance for country and global audiences as well as advocacy for uptake of new indicators.

The position will be based on the JHBSPH Program for Human Nutrition (PHN) and the candidate will be an active member of the Institute for International Programs (IIP) evaluation team. IIP’s mission is to improve the evidence base for strong public health programming for maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition (MNCH&N), working collaboratively with implementers, research institutions and Governments in high-burden countries.

Roles and Responsibilities: This faculty member will play a leadership role, under the mentorship of the Principle Investigator, in a diverse set of activities related to the initiative (e.g. strategic and work planning with partners, facilitating country-level workshops, design and implementation of new measurement-related field studies, secondary analysis of existing data, preparing research or policy briefs, technical reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts) S/he is expected to be knowledgeable of nutrition measurement and evaluation issues and have field research experience in low and middle income country settings.

The faculty member may contribute to teaching within PHN and IIP courses and seminars as well as advising of practicum and masters-level students.

Qualifications: Doctoral level degree in the field of public health nutrition, epidemiology, evaluation, statistics or related field. Technical background and experience in designing and conducting program evaluations and/or development of monitoring & evaluation systems. Five years related experience including work in low- and middle-income countries. Demonstrate the ability to oversee design & implementation of mixed methods field studies and secondary analysis of large data sets. Publication record in peer- reviewed journals. Availability to travel 25%. Eligible candidates should have excellent organizational and time management skills. Ability to work effectively as a member of a team. The position requires excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Fluency in French is preferred.
