Position Description: The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is a world-renowned agency with a long tradition of protecting and promoting health in the nation's most culturally and linguistically diverse city. Since its creation as the Board of Health in 1805, the DOHMH has been recognized for its innovative and groundbreaking work to protect and promote the health of over 8 million residents. At the Mayor's request, the DOHMH in collaboration with other city agencies have developed a plan to support the statewide effort to bring the number of new HIV infections in New York to no more than 750 per year by 2020. The NYC plan to End the AIDS Epidemic draws upon the recommendations made in the Ending the Epidemic Task Force report (health.ny.gov/ete), and includes the following priorities: 1) promote education, distribution, and access to new medicines that prevent HIV; 2) expand delivery of new medicines; 3) support the social and physical health of marginalized populations, disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic; 4) enhance care for New Yorkers with HIV; 5) use state-of-the-art science to improve HIV prevention efforts. With fewer than 750 new infections each year, the City will experience a natural and progressive decline in the total number of people with HIV/AIDS.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

--Assist the STD Director in the training of subordinates, new personnel and others as required, implement new procedures in correct and timely manner and participate and cooperate in order functions consistent with the training of microbiologist.

--Obtain genital, blood and other specimens and performs lab tests as requested; perform Quality Control testing and preventive maintenance, record results and documents untoward occurrences and corrective action taken.

--Prepare accession records, patients lab reports, charts and other reports, records and information required by the bureau,; compiles with health and safety and all other policies and procedures of the bureau.

--Participate in quality assurance and proficiency testing and inspection programs implemented by the bureau or outside agencies.

--Maintain laboratory supplies and reagents.

Qualifications: 1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional, or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) with a major in the biological, chemical, or physical sciences or medical technology, and one year of experience as a microbiologist performing at the technician or higher level in a clinical or environmental laboratory setting; or 2. An associate degree in medical technology, or sixty college credits from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional, or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) including six credits in mathematics and six credits in either chemistry or biology and three years of experience as described in “1” above; or 3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization plus any combination of college education and experience described in “1" or “2” above to make up the equivalent of five years of education and experience. One year of experience credit will be given for each 30 semester credits of college education which includes at least 3 credits in mathematics and at least 3 credits in either chemistry or biology. However, all candidates must have at least one year of acceptable experience as described in “1” above. ** Employee MUST maintain a New York State (NYS) Laboratory Technologist license for the duration of employment
