Position Description: The Iowa Department of Public Health is recruiting for the position of State Public Health Medical Director and Epidemiologist, with a start date in late calendar year 2017. This position will serve as State Medical Director and State Epidemiologist for the Iowa Department of Public Health. Direct statewide disease surveillance, investigation, and follow- up. Assess trends of diseases, risk factors for health events, effectiveness of prevention and control efforts, and implement appropriate modifications to improve the health of Iowans. Consult with the public, local public health officials, and medical professionals on medical and epidemiological issues. Coordinates state health programs, and coordinates public health efforts across state lines and with federal agencies to identify and reduce the impacts of morbidity and mortality on Iowans. React to health events to assure appropriate public health response, and coordinate with other state agencies during emergencies to assist in public health preparedness and response.

Direct and participate in educational efforts concerning health risks, acute diseases, and disease prevention. This includes responding to media contacts, consultations to healthcare providers, involvement in a formal educational efforts for public health and medical professionals, meetings, conference, and seminars. Assist in dispersion of information such as the “Epi Update” and other department publications. Prepare articles and documents for publication in appropriate professional journals as indicated. Provide medical and epidemiological support to other department areas as needed or requested including tobacco use and control, chronic disease, and behavioral health. Provide other state agencies with medical, epidemiological, and public health support as requested.

Applicant must be a licensed Iowa (or eligible for immediate licensure in Iowa) Medical Doctor (MD), or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO); and Board certified in public health or a combined master’s in Public Health and completion of Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) or equivalent training.

Exact start date is negotiable based on candidate availability and work experience and will include an overlap employment period with the current Medical Director/Epidemiologist.

Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited school of medicine, completion of an internship program and licensure as a physician by the State of Iowa.
