Position Description: The Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) and Antimicrobial Resistance Program within the Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness (CEDEP) division of the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) is accepting applications for two (2) full time Epidemiologists. We are seeking to fill an Epidemiologist 1 and Epidemiologist 2 position.

These positions are currently funded from year to year through CDC cooperative agreements (grants). Some in-state and out of state travel is required. Job duties will include:

• Participating in data collection, entry, cleaning, and analysis for HAI, MDRO, and antimicrobial stewardship projects • Participating in HAI- and MDRO-related projects, including a point prevalence study of HAIs and antimicrobial use, onsite and remote validation of HAI data, and other special projects • Monitoring collection, data quality, and analysis of antimicrobial use and susceptibility data from laboratories and healthcare facilities across the state, including the use of REDCap, and the NHSN Antimicrobial Use (AU) module • Leading HAI prevention collaboratives for healthcare facilities across the state • Collaborating with the Tennessee Center for Patient Safety, End Stage Renal Disease Network 8, the Tennessee Pharmacists Association, and other partners on HAI prevention activities • Preparing and delivering presentations on HAIs and antimicrobial stewardship to local, state, and national partners • Participating in HAI and MDRO outbreak investigations as needed • Assisting in the preparation of grant applications, progress reports, scientific articles and presentations, and other deliverables • Performing programmatic project management activities related to HAI and antimicrobial stewardship projects

Qualifications: Epidemiologist 1 Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience: The minimum qualifications for this level will be a master’s degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, statistics or health informatics. Degree must be from an accredited college or university.

OR

Substitution of Experience for Education: A master’s degree in a health science, biomedical science or environmental science field with two years’ work experience in epidemiology. Degree must be from an accredited college or university.

Epidemiologist 2 Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience: The minimum qualifications for this level will be a doctorate degree in medicine (MD), osteopathic medicine (DO) or veterinarian medicine (DVM) and two years’ experience in epidemiology. Degrees must be from an accredited college or university. OR

Substitution of Education for Experience: A master’s degree in a health science, biomedical science or environmental science field or Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH); or a doctorate degree in epidemiology. Degrees must be from an accredited college or university.

OR

Substitution of Experience for Education: A doctorate degree in public health, biostatistics, statistics, health informatics, health sciences, biomedical sciences or environmental sciences, plus two years work experience in epidemiology; or a master’s degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, statistics or health informatics with four years’ work experience in epidemiology; or a master’s degree in a health science, biomedical science or environmental science field with six years’ work experience in epidemiology. Degrees must be from an accredited college or university. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) or CDC/Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologist (CSTE) Applied Epidemiology Fellowship can substitute for two years’ work experience.

Desired Qualifications: • Communicable disease surveillance experience at a local or state public health department. • Experience writing statistical and analytical programming code in SAS. • Experience in reviewing medical records. • Experience in infection control or quality improvement activities.

Organization Description: The position is located in the Tennessee Department of Health, Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness program in Nashville, Tennessee http://tn.gov/health/section/CEDEP. The HAI team at the TDH is a dynamic, multi- disciplinary, data-driven team that works very closely with external partners such as the CDC, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Prevention, the Tennessee Hospital Association, the Tennessee Center for Patient Safety, Qsource, the Tennessee Pharmacists Association, End Stage Renal Disease Network 8, the Tennessee Ambulatory Surgery Center Association, and the Tennessee Initiative for Perinatal Quality Care.

The Epidemiologist 2 is a full time executive service position. Minimum salary is $5,482 monthly depending on education and experience, with a standard benefits package. No relocation assistance is available. The Epidemiologist 2 will have formal supervisory responsibilities.
