Position Description: This is a 12-month appointment, federally funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) Cooperative Agreement for the budget period beginning August 1, 2017.

Duties: The incumbent would have primary responsibility for ALL aspects of the statewide foodborne and enteric disease surveillance and response program including planning, organizing,and coordinating investigational and educational epidemiologic activities. Ensure implementation and monitoring of all ELC-funded foodborne and enteric disease activities including project identification, grant application, progress reports and budget/expenditure tracking.

The incumbent should have a thorough knowledge of the epidemiology of enteric diseases at the national and state levels and be able to apply that knowledge toward improving public health practice to prevent foodborne illness.

The incumbent will be responsible for • Enhancing Hawaii’s foodborne and enteric disease surveillance system, including development and maintenance of databases. • Collating and compiling foodborne and enteric disease data for internal and external reporting, including to CDC for national trend analyses. • Serving as program liaison among epidemiology, laboratory, and environmental health subject matter experts at the local, state, and national levels. Providing routine consultation and guidance to field investigators in the conduct of foodborne and enteric disease investigations to include the collection of clinical, food, and environmental samples, and recommending laboratory analyses and control measures. • Apprising and advising the program of current and developing trends related to statewide foodborne and enteric illness activity. • Coordinating and facilitating joint investigations and special studies with other programs, government agencies, and the private sector.

Travel may be required; must possess a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications: Must possess excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and oral/written communication skills. Bachelor’s degree, and Masters in Public Health required including coursework in microbiology, epidemiology, or environmental health and 2 years of work experience in public health.
