Position Description: The Enteric Disease Epidemiology Branch (EDEB) at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is seeking an enthusiastic, detail-oriented, bachelor- level candidate for an exciting position with the National Surveillance Team (NST), which conducts surveillance of multiple enteric conditions including listeriosis, botulism, salmonellosis, shigellosis, cholera, vibriosis, typhoid fever, and E. coli. The position is planned to start in September 2017. The TRA will provide technical assistance to support programmatic activities of the team and EDEB as needed. In addition to providing administrative and organizational support, the TRA will have the opportunity to observe and participate in many aspects of a busy surveillance team, including data collection and management, analysis, communication with public health partners (e.g., state public health departments, federal agencies), public health informatics, communications, and policy.

Specific duties include:

The TRA will work closely with epidemiologists to support national surveillance systems (40%). These duties include answering phone or email inquiries, assisting with data entry and records management, regularly transmitting data to partner agencies, serving as a back-up database manager, and cleaning and descriptive analysis, as needed. Technical duties (30%) include working with NST to create, review, and edit website content, communicating changes to the webmaster, and ensuring that webpages are updated and 508 compliant; maintain internal and external Microsoft SharePoint sites to include project tracking and maintaining user permissions; and liaising with the communications team about scientific publications and public messaging. Administrative duties (30%) include preparing meeting agendas, taking meeting minutes, and coordinating responses to Freedom of Information Act requests (FOIA), and coordinating meetings between other public health or industry partners and CDC. Additional duties may include other special projects, such as analysis, writing, public health communications, efficiency improvements, and policy, depending on need and candidate’s interest and abilities. The TRA will meet regularly with supervisors to discuss their work and will have the opportunity to receive mentorship from professionals at various stages in their public health careers.

Qualified candidates will hold a bachelor’s degree in a science-related field, have excellent organizational, communication, and writing skills, be very detail-oriented and efficient, be proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, and Access), have the ability to work independently and as a team member, and have a passion for public health. Experience in Adobe Pro, SharePoint, project management software, or statistical software (e.g., SAS, R, or other) a plus. This is an entry-level, bachelor-degree position. Candidates MUST have received their degree within the past 5 years. Candidates with an advanced degree (master or doctoral level, including MD and DVM) will NOT be considered.

Position will be funded through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). Position is a one-year fellowship, with option of renewal. Health insurance provided.
