Position Description:

JOB TITLE:  Microbiologist

TRAVEL:  As required to fulfill the responsibilities of the position

IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients.  The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of IHRC, Inc. and will be assigned to the Parasitic Diseases Branch (PDB), Division of Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria (DPDM), Center for Global Health, at the CDC, 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA.  


The Microbiologist will support development and validation of novel assays and surveillance tools for trachoma and other neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), including technical support and training for trachoma and NTD surveillance tools.


  • Conduct laboratory procedures and processes related to development of antibody and antigen detection methods to support research on trachoma
  • Perform serological, microbiological, and molecular techniques to detect parasite antigens and/or nucleic acids including DNA extraction, conventional and real-time PCR, sequencing and sequence analysis
  • Conduct data analysis on information collected
  • Actively participate in the laboratory quality management system by ensuring the full range of applicable quality controls are correctly conducted
  • Assist in proper collection and storage of laboratory data
  • Assume responsibility for processing, triage and maintenance of a "chain-of-custody" for incoming specimens
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals
  • Prepare written documents and reports
  • Calibrate, develop and operate laboratory instruments that are necessary to perform specialized tests, analyses and other standard procedures in conducting experiments and studies
  • Place and track orders for laboratory reagents, laboratory supplies, and equipment needs
  • Conduct evaluation of laboratory experiments to determine whether data generated are accurate and valid, and identify unusual or unexpected results and their probable causes
  • Provide technical assistance to partners and collaborators in the form of training and consultation



Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in microbiology or a related biological science


  • Demonstrated experience with laboratory techniques
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in immunological and molecular parasitology or microbiology


  • Specific experience with trachoma serological techniques and/or trachoma serologic test development
  • Knowledge about the diagnostic morphological features of common human parasites
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory procedures and biosafety guidelines including regulations related to proper handling and storage of various biological materials
  • Understanding of laboratory quality management systems and willingness to strictly adhere to approved methods and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Skills to independently handle unexpected conditions that may arise during the normal course of work, to troubleshoot, and to follow established guidelines for how to report and investigate non-conforming events
  • Knowledge of and experience working with database management systems

Language Skills:

  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English   


  • Must be United States citizen or permanent resident or have authorization for employment in the United States
