Position Description: The Vaccine Preventable Disease (VPD) Coordinator manages the VPD program at the Virginia Department of Health, within the Division of Immunization (VDH-DOI). Disease and conditions of primary focus include Varicella, Meningococcal Disease, Acute Flaccid Myelitis, with secondary focus on Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae. Activities include conducting disease surveillance for VPDs jointly with the VDH Division of Surveillance and Investigation and local health departments (LHDs); reviewing and analyzing VPD data monthly for completeness and coordinating with the LHDs to ensure all available surveillance data has been entered into the state disease database; submitting quarterly VPD surveillance coordination activity summaries to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); collaborating with the state public health laboratory in Virginia and the LHDs to increase the number of specimens submitted to the lab for testing and confirmation, consulting with LHDs to advise of updates to the Virginia Disease Control Manual to recommend procedures for investigation, control measures and prophylaxis for contacts; enhancing surveillance and epidemiologic capacity through VDH newsletters, educational materials and social media.

Qualifications: Considerable knowledge of the cause, transmission, treatment, and prevention of communicable diseases and other conditions of public health importance, including vaccine preventable diseases, methods of public health surveillance and disease outbreak investigations, relevant federal and state laws, regulations, and policies regarding the reporting and control of disease. Working knowledge of statistical software packages, computer data analysis, data management techniques, program management; surveillance, oral and written communication; and decision-making skills. Ability to prepare and manage grants/budgets, program development, implementation, and evaluation, conduct research, make recommendations and apply findings, develop and execute goals and objectives, evaluate program effectiveness, establish and maintain strong working relationships with various groups; prepare/review reports and educational materials, develop, interpret and implement policies and procedures; and provide technical assistance.
