Position Description: The Public Health Preparedness Program Assistant will support several key public health preparedness planning and response activities, including providing administrative and logistical support for management of a large and very active volunteer corps, assisting with the planning and execution of all Program trainings and exercises, and supporting several new planning initiatives. This is a rare opportunity to gain valuable work experience in a major urban health department. This position is full-time, Monday through Friday, for a one- year period and may be renewed if funding is sustained. On occasion, the successful candidate will also be expected to work after hours and on Saturdays to support Program activities.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

• Support the Program’s Volunteer Coordinator with the management of the Philadelphia Medical Reserve Corps Unit. Specific duties include daily management of the volunteer database, responding to volunteer inquiries, helping to plan and execute volunteer trainings and events, and assisting with the development of a policies and procedures manual • Support Health Communications by maintaining communications databases, assisting in emergency notification drills, and issuing communications under the supervision of the Communications Lead • Assist the lead planner in planning, executing, evaluating, and documenting the Program’s annual first responder influenza vaccination clinics • Conduct research on preparedness topics, including emerging infectious diseases and climate change, to support the work of the Program • Provide event support, including organizing participant materials, ensuring venue readiness, and preparing meeting minutes or similar documentation • Provide logistical support, such as assisting with inventory maintenance, organizing supplies, and troubleshooting equipment • Participate and assist in the execution of meetings, exercises, workshops, trainings, real events and other preparedness program initiatives • Assist with the completion and submission of any Program certifications and/or assessments, such as Project Public Health Ready and/or the CDC’s Operational Readiness Review • Prepare documents to support various preparedness projects, including drafting content for and/or updating response plans as directed by Program management • Assist with special projects at the discretion of Program management

Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in a science oriented field from an accredited college or university with an interest in public health or emergency management. Two years of work experience in a professional setting preferred. Applicants should have working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. This position requires attention to detail, excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to organize and present information effectively. Applicants should be equally comfortable working individually and within a team environment that emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration.

Organization Description: The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH), through its Bioterrorism and Public Health Preparedness Program (BT-PHP), located within the Division of Disease Control, is the lead administrative and planning agency for public health emergency preparedness and response in the City of Philadelphia. BT- PHP is responsible for establishing local public health preparedness priorities, developing and testing response plans, coordinating with local, state, and federal partners, and managing the public health response to real events. Due to the complex and resource-intensive nature of public health emergencies, extensive planning is needed to ensure that the City is prepared to respond effectively.
