Position Description: The Assistant Public Health Laboratory Director provides support to the Director to manage, lead, and direct the public health laboratory program for the State of South Carolina. This position works with the Director to share the vision and and support leadership to chart the strategic direction of the laboratory in collaboration with programs in the Division of Public Health and with other state agencies, local public health laboratories, and the clinical laboratory community. This position ensures that the laboratory provides relevant, accurate scientific data essential for disease surveillance, prevention, and control, developing public health policy, and responding to statewide public health threats caused by common or emerging biological, chemical, including those that may be disseminated through deliberate acts of terrorism. The Assistant Director supports the professional administrative and technical oversight in planning, negotiating, organizing, staffing, directing, and evaluating the services of the Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Qualifications: Doctorate level degree in a laboratory science (i.e., Public Health, Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry, or a related Chemical, Physical or Biological Science), with at least three (3) years of responsibility and progressive experience in an administrative capacity in a CLIA laboratory, or possess a MD with certification in anatomical and/or clinical pathology plus management/supervisory training programs, with experience in public health operation and management.

Institutions of higher learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Capability of meeting the Federal CLIA '88 personnel requirements for a Director of a high complexity testing laboratory is preferred. To qualify as high complexity CLIA, Laboratory Director must be in compliance with the 1988 Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, CMS, HHS Pt. 493. 1443 Standard: Laboratory Director qualifications (i.e., hold a doctorate and be board-certified by one of the recognized clinical and pathology certification boards; or be an MD with two years clinical laboratory experience). Preference will be given to those who are CLIA-certified lab directors.

Organization Description: The SC Department of Health and Environmental Control provides public health services to the citizens of South Carolina. The SC DHEC Public Health Laboratory is a CLIA certified high complexity laboratory.
