Position Description: The Public Health Foundation Enterprises (PHFE) and the Public Health, Policy, and Planning Division of the County of San Mateo, are recruiting for the position of Epidemiologist I for surveillance and data analysis for Zika Virus and other arboviral diseases. SUMMARY The Epidemiology and Communicable Disease Programs of the Public Health, Policy, and Planning Division are responsible for surveillance, investigation, and prevention of Zika Virus in the county. This Epidemiologist I position is responsible for epidemiological analyses of Zika and other vector-borne diseases, under the direction of the Supervising Epidemiologist of the Epidemiology Program. Duties performed will help reduce the risk of vector-borne disease transmission to San Mateo County residents. The Epidemiologist will interact with other County programs, divisions, and agencies, including the Communicable Disease Program, the Public Health Laboratory, the Environmental Health Division, and the San Mateo County Vector Control Agency, as well as with the California Department of Public Health, to perform essential functions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Conduct surveillance of Zika lab reports and confidential morbidity reports, including interfacing with providers and labs to obtain case information, to monitor for an increased number of Zika cases in the county. Conduct Zika syndromic surveillance through the ESSENCE system. Perform statistical analysis of Zika lab results and case information obtained from the Zika Case Report Form, the Maternal Health History Form, the Infant Follow Up Form, and any other relevant records. Investigate any potential clusters of suspected Zika cases. Assist in enhanced arboviral surveillance efforts. Work with the San Mateo County Communications Program to produce educational/outreach materials for Zika to populations deemed to be at-risk based on surveillance/data analysis. Compile data to support vector control interventions and to determine whether there is evidence of local transmission in the county

Qualifications: Ability to collect, interpret, and analyze health data and draw valid conclusions and prepare statistical and narrative reports. ?Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with colleagues, public health and healthcare professionals, the public, and other stakeholders. Knowledge and application of HIPAA requirements and protection of health information. ?Demonstrated knowledge and skills related to epidemiological methodologies. Analytical and problem solving skills and attention to detail. Ability to complete assignments in a timely and efficient manner. ?Ability to prioritize, manage multiple tasks, and work independently. Prior knowledge and experience in use of CalREDIE, or other electronic disease registry preferred.

Education/Experience ?Possession of a Master’s degree with an emphasis in epidemiology and/or analysis and assessment. Substitutions: Possession of a doctoral degree in epidemiology OR a bachelor’s or other non-epidemiology professional degree or certification and two years of experience performing epidemiology work under the guidance of a mid-level or senior-level epidemiologist. Experience in collecting, managing, and analyzing public health data. Experience with clinical terminology and interpreting laboratory testing results. ?Intermediate knowledge and use of SPSS, Stata, SAS, R, and GIS.
