JOB TITLE: Biological Safety Specialist

TRAVEL:  Domestic travel as needed

IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management and administrative program support to various Centers, Institutes and Offices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under several contracts.  The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of IHRC, Inc., and will be assigned to the Division of Scientific Resources (DSR), at the CDC, 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA, to provide laboratory safety support services for the Division.


The Biological Safety Specialist will provide biological, technical, and laboratory safety management support services to the Division of Scientific Resources


  • Leverage biological safety and scientific expertise to plan, organize, manage, operate, and assess a laboratory biosafety program for DSR
  • Provide laboratory safety and biological security expertise to DSR leadership and staff
  • Advise the DSR Director, the DSR Associate Director for Laboratory Science, and the DSR Quality Assurance Director on matters related to laboratory safety
  • Serve as a liaison to the NCEZID biosafety office
  • Represent DSR on NCEZID committees and workgroups as the DSR safety expert
  • Perform routine biosafety risk assessments
  • Assist Branch Chiefs in developing and implementing mitigation strategies resulting from risk assessments
  • Conduct root cause analyses and implement corrective actions for safety related incidents
  • Develop and update continuity of operations and surge plans
  • Assure that laboratory practices throughout DSR are in compliance with all pertinent safety regulations and conducted in a manner that protects the safety of all staff, DSR customers, the public, and the environment
  • Monitor and evaluate routine biological and microbiological safety practices throughout DSR
  • Serve as a point of contact for reporting and responding to safety incidents in DSR
  • Document and tracks safety incidents for reporting and quality purposes
  • Evaluate biological and laboratory safety training needs of DSR staff and arrange for all appropriate safety training to be completed; collaborate with Environmental Safety, Health, and Compliance Office to ensure that CDC laboratory staff receive training on safety topics relevant to DSR services and operations such as laboratory waste handling
  • Assure timely and appropriate communications on matters of laboratory safety
  • Keep abreast of and implement new policies and practices in laboratory safety
  • Conduct annual inspections to ensure adherence to biosafety regulations and DSR standard operating procedures
  • Review standard operating procedures for safety concerns
  • Provide input on the installation of new equipment and the construction of new facilities for DSR
  • Communicate biosafety policies, procedures, and risks to staff as needed



Education and Experience:

  • MS or PhD, with 5 years of laboratory experience as it relates to biology, microbiology, and biological safety


  • Broad-based knowledge of laboratory procedures, biological hazards, chemical hazards, and laboratory safety
  • Strong knowledge of Select Agents
  • Expertise in biology, microbiology, or molecular biology
  • Strong knowledge and experience with infectious agents
  • Experience with assessing and mitigating biological hazards to maintain compliance with the CDC guidelines, the BMBL, the Select Agent regulations, and any additional applicable regulations
  • Experience with developing, implementing, and reviewing laboratory policies and procedures regarding biosafety principles and practices
  • Experience with developing and providing training for biosafety programs including emergency response procedures, biological safety, select agents, and biological safety cabinets
  • Outstanding written communication skills
  • Strong understanding of scientific/technical information


  • Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) or Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP) credentials
  • Previous experience working in a similar role

Language Skills:

  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English   


  • Must be United States citizen or permanent resident or have authorization for employment in the United States
