Position Description: A research opportunity is available at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID), in Atlanta, Georgia.

Located at the CVDB Immunology Laboratory, the participant will learn laboratory skills including antigen production, specimen processing, sample testing, archiving in support of human papilloma virus (HPV) seroepidemiology and vaccine implementation. Specific activities may include but are not limited to: • Cataloging, processing and storing biologic samples received in the HPV serology laboratory while observing all safety guidelines • Performing DNA purification, tissue-culture and HPV virus-like particle production and purification • Performing Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assays (ELISA) and other immunologic and molecular assays as assigned • Recording and maintaining hardcopy and electronic copies of laboratory notebooks detailing experiments and results and submitting reports of tasks performed as they are requested • Performing quality control and safety procedures necessary for the performance of laboratory protocols involved in working with biohazard materials • Assisting in laboratory quality management activities • Attending weekly departmental meetings that address current scientific activities of the branch

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, GA area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a biological science-related or public health field received within the last five years is required. Experience with cell-culture and immunoassays is preferred.
