Position Description: The mission of the Bureau of TB Control is to prevent the spread of tuberculosis and to eliminate it as a pulblic health problem in New York City. The goals to achieve this mission are twofold: 1) To identify all individuals with suspected or confirmed TB disease and ensure appropriate treatment. 2) ensure that individuals at high risk for progression from TB infection to TB disease are identified and do not develop TB disease. The Office of Surveillance and Epidemiology conducts surveillance of suspected and confirmed cases of TB, maintains the TB registry and case management system (Maven) for all TB cases, contacts to TB cases, persons suspected of having TB and children under 5 with latent TB infection, conducts epidemiologic/outbreak investigations to assess TB transmission in congregate settings and conducts data analysis and research to describe the epidemiology of TB in NYC and to inform TB control policy.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

- Provide physician-level subject matter expertise on issues related to the Office of Surveillance and Epidemiology staff, i.e., reporting and case detection, informing decisions about expanding contact investigations, infectiousness of patients, and working with infection prevention staff and environmental experts on issues of TB transmission, medical consultation and other clinical issues;

- The Medical Epidemiologist will work on provider education by acting as a consultant to community doctors on these matters;

- Serve as an epidemiologist and clinical subject matter expert on TB and stay up to date with current literature;

- Conduct research and write scientific manuscripts, as appropriate;

- Clinical physician responsibilities include: medical evaluation and treatment of patients with TB disease and LTBI, clinical medical consultation, and evaluation of discharge of infectious patients to the community;

- The Medical Epidemiologist will also have the opportunity to represent the agency on conference calls and at local and national meetings, respond to outside inquiries including working with the media and giving talks to providers and the community;

Qualifications: a) A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and b) Completion of an approved residency program in an accredited hospital, including three years of experience, in either internal medicine, or family practice, or pediatrics, or another related specialty area required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; and c) Valid board certification or board eligibility issued by the appropriate American Subspecialty Board in Infectious Disease, Pulmonary Medicine, or a related subspecialty; and d) Completion of an approved fellowship program in an accredited hospital, including two years of experience, in either infectious diseases, or pulmonary medicine, or another related subspecialty required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Preferred Skills - Previous experience with tuberculosis or other infectious diseases

- Master's degree in epidemiology or other relevant discipline

- Previous experience working go on data analysis or manuscript preparation

- Strong oral and written communication skills
