Position Description: A fellowship opportunity is available with the Research and Evaluation Team of the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, Prevention Communication Branch, at the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

This Fellowship reports to the Research and Evaluation Team of the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, Prevention Communication Branch. NCHHSTP/DHAP/PCB is currently conducting evaluation research on ten HIV social marketing campaigns. In addition, the team is responsible for the development of an interactive, electronic, tailored comprehensive HIV risk reduction guide. The objective of this project is to provide the intern with an educational experience in the development of a new area of research and practice while at the same time providing CDC with much needed assistance in the process of coordinating this work. The specific project objectives as they relate to the organization’s mission are as follows:

The goals and objectives of this project are to support the CDC HIV/AIDS Prevention Division to:

• Decrease the rate of HIV transmission by HIV-infected persons. • Increase the proportion of HIV-infected people in the United States who know they are infected. • Work with Research and Evaluation Team to develop questionnaires, track process data, implement formative research activities, develop logic model(s), and conduct summative evaluations. • Help conduct literature reviews. • Attend relevant meetings both internal and external.

The purpose of the project is to provide the intern with an educational experience in HIV testing and prevention research and evaluation while at the same time providing CDC with much needed assistance in the process of coordinating this effort. All social marketing campaigns developed and implemented by the Prevention Communication Branch (PCB) are based on market research conducted throughout the entire campaign development process. After the campaign is developed, each one is evaluated through process evaluation and outcome evaluation.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment- related benefits.

Qualifications: Candidates should have a master’s degree in public health (or equivalent degree), preferably specializing in behavioral science and/or health education, or a communication degree specializing in health communication. Additionally, training and/or knowledge of HIV/AIDS prevention, evaluation, quantitative and qualitative analysis, and health communication/social marketing theory is beneficial.
