Position Description: Responsible for the accuracy, currency, and organizational appropriateness of all cancer-related information developed by the American Cancer Society for distribution to the general public, cancer patients and survivors and their families, and healthcare professionals. Provides perspective on medical accuracy and value to patients and providers of Society Health IT initiatives, including website functionality and tools, smartphone and web-based apps, and EMR/EHR integrations. Serves as a knowledgeable oncology content and health literacy resource to the organization.

• Directs the development, review, and maintence of a large body of encyclopedic cancer information used by the Society’s National Cancer Information Center (NCIC) and published on the Society’s website, cancer.org. Develops processes to assure quality of this cancer information. • Directs the development, review, and maintenance of the Society's printed patient and consumer education materials. • Oversees a staff including in-house physicians and nurses who create, review, and maintain this vast body of online and printed cancer information. • Develops and implements yearly business plans, forecasts, and budgets. • Participates in Society strategic planning that is regional and national in scope, with a focus on improving the appeal of these strategies to both health care professionals and patients. • Serves as a medical advisor for all departmental Health IT-related projects (website enhancements, smartphone apps, EMR/EHR integrations, etc.), assuring they are medically accurate and add value to the patient and/or provider experience and support organizational priorities. • Provides medical and clinical insight for evaluation of strategic partnerships and collaborations. Represents ACS in national meetings and committees. • Provides strategy and editorial direction of innovative programming, products, and tools for content delivery. • Keeps apprised of ICD10 codes and evolving trends in electronic medical records systems to inform content creation and dissemination. • Advises on proper distribution of medical content through third party engagements including sponsorships and syndication to avoid potential conflicts of interest. • Works with other editorial staff and departments to identify opportunities for enhancements to content, tools, and functionality of cancer.org. Assures projects maintain standards for medical accuracy. • Directs the medical review of cancer information for other business units and Society departments, including books from the Cancer Control Publishing group, the Cancer Control Digital Content group, Corporate Communications and Integrated Marketing, to assure accuracy, consistency, and understandability of information. • Advises on and helps develop patient- facing language for Society guidelines. • Works with Cancer Control Publishing group to develop book content strategies. • Serves as a content expert to Divisions and Corporate Center staff on projects to deliver cancer-related information to target audiences, including those with a primary language other than English. • Directs the development of and implements processes to assure quality of content translated into other languages. • Fosters and cultivates the development of staff to improve writing skills to address health literacy and patient education needs, and to assure knowledgable oncology staff. • Serves as a knowledgable oncology content and health literacy resource to staff. • Fosters relationships and productive interactions with health professionals and professional organizations to assure a growing body of individuals from whom medical content experts can be drawn to assist with content review. • Participates in ongoing oncology education training and clinical direction to NCIC staff, including nursing staff. • Works with NCIC to assure cancer-related information meets the needs of our constituents and to identify gaps in content. Assists in training staff to deliver cancer information appropriately. • Serves as a knowledgeable representative of the Society in meetings and conferences for health professionals and cancer survivors

Qualifications: Position Requirements: MD or DO, preferably with specialty training or certification in hematology/oncology or MSN with OCN or other oncology certification. Minimum of 6 years experience in clinical practice and minimum of 4 years management experience. Background in patient education and Health IT strongly preferred. Fluency or proficiency in Spanish highly desired.

• Knowledge/expertise in cancer treatment and supportive care, bio-psychosocial sciences, public health, and training/mentoring/consultative skills. • Knowledge/expertise in cancer prevention and screening guidelines. • Knowledge/expertise in cancer survivorship guidelines and needs. • Knowledge/expertise in emerging healthcare technologies and trends, including EMRs/EHRs, smartphone and web- based apps, and ICD-10 codes. • Knowledge of online content management systems and best practices for online content delivery. • Familiarity with health policy and trends in public health with ability to advise on their implications for content strategy, production, and delivery. • Knowledge of appropriate writing styles and content standards, including web/mobile content and low literacy content needs. • Knowledge of adult education principles and material development. • Skills in researching and fact-checking medical and scientific information using electronic databases. • Skills in written and oral communication with diverse ACS constituents from medical experts to general public. • Knowledge of how to communicate medical information in easy-to-understand language. • Knowledge of needs of people concerned about cancer and people with a cancer diagnosis. • Ability to lead editorial board of medical experts. • Ability to coordinate projects within and between departments. • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects. • Ability to problem solve, analyze and interpret data, and develop strategies based on data. • Ability to manage and direct a team of health professionals. • Good steward of ACS brand.
