Position Description: A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Epidemiology Resource Center at the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The selected fellow will develop and implement novel surveillance methods to conduct enhanced surveillance of antibiotic-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The assigned project, funded through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), aims to establish a gonococcal antibiotic resistance surveillance program at four high-volume health centers most likely to see a diverse population of men who have sex with men (MSM) and other community members at high risk for gonorrhea/drug-resistant gonorrhea, and will include genital and extragenital gonococcal screening. The fellow will contrast epidemiologic characteristics of closely and distantly related infections within social and sexual networks; identify risk factors most commonly associated with antibiotic-resistant gonococcal infections; create a monthly reporting template to summarize epidemiologic and laboratory findings; conduct provider surveys regarding preference of laboratory testing methods; and assess cost-effectiveness and specimen quality of different laboratory testing methods. Other related duties as assigned. The fellow will report to the STD Epidemiologist Coordinator within the ISDH Epidemiology Resource Center for day-to-day operational guidance, whereas supervision authority will be managed by a staff person in the Epidemiology and Statistics Branch in the Division of STD Prevention at CDC.

This position will be an Associate or Senior Service Fellow with CDC (Title 42), depending on education level and prior experience. This position is a conditional appointment, with an initial term of three years and potential subsequent renewals every three years, but not to exceed ten years total duration (inclusive of initial term plus renewals). The selected candidate will be embedded in the Indiana State Department of Health, HIV/STD Division, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Renewals after the initial three years will be based on BSTDPE need and available funding. The position has a minimum starting salary of $72,663 plus benefits for a GS-12, and $86,406 plus benefits for a GS-13. No funds are available for moving expenses. Up to 10% travel may be required. The incumbent must be a US citizen, and willing to submit to a background check.

Qualifications: Qualifications:

1) A master’s degree in epidemiology, public health or related field; proficiency in SAS, SQL, Stata, or similar data analysis software; and two years of professional research experience in epidemiology, public health, or a related field. Candidates with a PhD degree are encouraged to apply.

2) A minimum of two publications in peer-reviewed journals (one must be first author) for GS-12, or a minimum of six publications in peer-reviewed journals (one must be first author) for GS-13.
