Position Description: The ideal candidate for this Research Scientist position will be a highly trained clinician with experience conducting vaccine research. This individual will be expected to design, execute and lead vaccine clinical trials and observational studies, conduct scholarly research that is recognized nationally and internationally, and collaborate with the director of the Kaiser Permanente Vaccine Study Center (KPVSC), other Kaiser Division of Research (DOR) investigators, and Kaiser Permanente clinicians and leadership to advance knowledge in the field of vaccine safety and effectiveness. The position will be at the level of Research Scientist Investigator I, II or III commensurate with experience.

Qualifications: Required qualifications include: 1) an MD degree or equivalent; 2) board certified in a primary care specialty, or equivalent; and 3) current, active medical license. Subspecialty training in infectious diseases, or another subspecialty with strong interest in infectious diseases and MPH or MSc in clinical trials, epidemiology or equivalent experience is also highly preferred. The successful candidate should have the ability to successfully compete for external research funding and independent scholarly publications in peer-reviewed medical literature, demonstrated history of successful collaboration in research and/or with clinicians, competence in common statistical techniques, study designs and general research methods used in epidemiological and health services research, and preferably experience working with electronic medical records.

Organization Description: The Division of Research (DOR) of The Permanente Medical Group (Kaiser Permanente Northern California [KPNC]) seeks a Research Scientist for its Vaccine Study Center. Investigators in the DOR draw on rich clinical data derived from comprehensive electronic medical records and access the diverse population of >3.9 million members of KPNC. DOR has more than 50 research scientists who lead well-developed programs in cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, health care delivery and policy, behavioral health and aging, cancer, infectious diseases, and women’s and children’s health. Embedded within the DOR, the Kaiser Permanente Vaccine Study Center (KPVSC) is a leader in evaluating vaccines with a long history of collaboration with multiple agencies, particularly the CDC’s Immunization Safety Office. The KPVSC has also been engaged in Phase II, III, and IV vaccine trials, collaborating with the pharmaceutical industry and FDA to help bring new vaccines into licensure and then to evaluate and ensure their safety.
