Position Description: The Vector-borne Disease Epidemiologist (VE) position is located within the Infectious & Zoonotic Disease Program at the New Jersey Department of Health’s Communicable Disease Service (CDS), located in Trenton, NJ. Under the direction of the Vector-borne Disease Coordinator, the VE will perform surveillance and data analysis activities specific to vector-borne diseases. The VE will provide support and guidance to regional epidemiologists and local health departments to evaluate epidemiologic public health practices, and implement and maintain effective surveillance, prevention, control efforts and other interventions, in order to reduce human infections due to vector-borne diseases. Key activities: • Develop case investigation protocols in compliance with the CSTE public health surveillance case definition and NJ statewide response plans; provide technical assistance to local health departments and healthcare partners for vector-borne disease investigation and reporting; review investigation data and classify cases. • Monitor the epidemiology, incidence, and geographic distribution of nationally notifiable vector-borne diseases, e.g., Zika virus, WNV, etc. • Identify vector-borne disease outbreaks to facilitate timely and effective control measures; participate in CDS outbreak response teams, as needed • Perform descriptive analyses, write reports, develop tools (e.g., questionnaires, worksheets, line lists), apply analytical methods and data management strategies • Collaborate with vector-borne disease partners within NJ, within the region, and nationally. • Generate epidemiologic reports; provide timely and accurate information on vector-borne disease activity to healthcare providers, researchers, political leaders, and general public • Provide training and educational programs to public health partners via in- person and webinar presentations • Participate in national/regional discussions to improve surveillance methods for identifying cases and analyzing data in a meaningful way. • Implement and evaluate epidemiologic public health practice, and prevention and control strategies. • Participate in conferences/meetings related to vector- borne disease surveillance and response.

Qualifications: Minimum qualifications: • Master of Public Health degree in Epidemiology (preferred) or other relevant Master’s degree in the health field with at least 2 years of relevant experience. • Experience with communicable disease investigations and applied epidemiology, plus proficiency in statistical analysis programs (e.g., SAS, Excel, Access). • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team. • Excellent oral presentation and written communication skills • Valid Driver’s License and access to vehicle transportation is required.

Additional Information: This temporary contract position is approved for funding through ACRO (temporary agency) through July 2017, with the possibility of extension. Salary is $55/hour with no benefits.
