The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is seeking a responsible, enthusiastic team player to serve as AHD’s Population Health Epidemiologist. The Population Health Epidemiologist is responsible for carrying out a broad and moderately complex range of investigative and analytical epidemiologic activities in Alexandria City. Primary responsibilities are focused in three broad areas: population health research and reporting; communicable disease (CD) investigations; and research, survey design, data analysis and presentation.

Population Health Research and Reporting: monitors the health of the community through exploring, mining, and developing data sources; analyzing, evaluating, and interpreting data; identifying trends; and drafting reports. The incumbent provides technical epidemiology support to agency efforts related to community health interventions, including taking a lead role in data tracking, monitoring and evaluation of the Community Health Assessment and Community Health Improvement Plan processes. Responsible for identifying additional sources for and methods of collecting data for use in evaluating the health status of the community.

Communicable Disease Investigations: monitors and tracks reportable disease incidents and evidence, with special emphasis on trends in disease patterns. Rotate responsibility with other Epidemiologists for conducting CD outbreak investigations and assure that appropriate measures are taken in a timely manner to prevent the spread of disease. Responsible for providing guidance to healthcare providers, nursing homes, schools and other entities in the management and mitigation of CD outbreaks. Incumbent will participate in district and regional CD activities and may serve in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during emergencies. Additionally, the incumbent will rotate responsibility for holding the 24/7 Epidemiology Duty Officer phone with other members of the epidemiology team.

Research, Survey Design, Analysis and Presentation: researches and provides epidemiology expertise to the Health Director, Deputy Health Director and AHD program areas. Designs surveys; advises on proper methodology for conducting surveys; analyzes and interprets results; and produces reports for various internal and external entities. Also serves as the lead on investigating new data visualization tools and methods.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training and experience in public health or a closely related field. Knowledge of communicable diseases and principles of epidemiology. Ability to apply research principles, develop/manage databases with MS Access/SQL, and analyze and interpret statistical information using standard statistical software (e.g. SAS, SPSS, Stata). Knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies on disease reporting and control.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, attention to detail, customer service skills, and ability to make presentations to large groups. Proven ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks in rapidly changing environment. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team. Ability to work in high stress environments during emergencies for up to 12 hours at a time.

Required to maintain a valid driver’s license and adhere to VDH’s driver safety policy. Must provide own transportation for participation in district and regional activities. Willing and able to work evenings/weekends, be on call and perform other duties as required.
